Day 3 - Year 13

Mathematics in real-life

Presenters / Conductors: Aditi Ghosh

Miss Aditi Ghosh is an applied Mathematician who has worked as an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater. She introduced the students to different branches of Mathematics: statistics and computation. Following a brief description of statistics; analyzing the data, processing the data, and utilizing the data to predict the future. She further highlighted the different scenarios that involve mathematics, ranging from situations in our daily lives to situations we can encounter as a mathematician. She emphasized different skills that are dominating various fields of mathematics such as, programming skills. She mentioned population dynamics, description of intercellular processes, and epidemiology as examples of the application of mathematics. Ronald Ross’s model was also mentioned to reflect the interconnection of biology and population dynamics involving mathematics. Throughout the session, she took the support of references from our daily lives such as the current pandemic, and gave us an insight into the role of mathematics. Towards the end, she stressed the demand for mathematics in the future and guided students to explore the substantial opportunities ahead of them. In conclusion, the session explored mathematics from various perspectives.
